Maybe you didn’t know that sex and therapy could go together or maybe you’ve already been considering getting help. We hear from so many people who silently feel disappointed, frustrated, and anxious about their sex lives but their doctors or therapists (even couples therapists!) have never asked them about it. Many people don’t even know if it is okay to bring it up to a professional but they do want to talk about it (or they are hesitant but would like a nudge). But it is possible to get sexual therapy from an expert that is professional, safe, and respectful, just like any other physical or mental health issue.
Dr. Elizabeth Bird offers sex therapy for individuals and couples that is candid, collaborative, and affirming. Her approach is grounded in your lived experience, your body, your history, your relationships, and your values.
Common areas include:
sexual desire
arousal and orgasm
differences between relationship partners
changes after childbirth, illness, or with menopause and aging
rebuilding following trauma
anxiety about intimacy
sexual pain
curiosity about kink or BDSM
We’ll take into account the full picture including psychological, relational, cultural, and biological factors and collaborate on next steps, including referrals to medical providers who are experts in sexual health.

Individuals: Brief Assessment
This option consists of committing to two sessions: an assessment and a feedback. Dr. Bird will provide education, book and podcast recommendations when possible, and helpful guidance. Feedback and recommendations are tailored to you.
Sometimes folks aren’t ready to commit to ongoing sex therapy. This is a way to get expert help but still try to meet your goals on your own.

Individuals: Assessment and Therapy
Individuals may also commit to a more traditional therapy process where they plan for ongoing treatment. Therapy ranges in length of time depending on your goals and preferences.
Dr. Bird starts with an assessment and you create a treatment plan together based on what she has learned about you. If you do have a partner, you may discuss the pros and cons of individual vs couple therapy options.

Couples
For couples seeking sex therapy, you both come in for your first session and then Dr. Bird will have an individual session with each of you before coming back together for another couples session. During this feedback session, you make a plan together for next steps based on what she has learned about you and your goals.
Therapy ranges in length of time depending on your goals and preferences. No brief assessment option is being offered at this time for couples.
Dr. Bird was interviewed about sex, desire, and mental health on the Spill Your Guts podcast.
